Hadrian's Wall extended west from Newcastle on the River Tyne to the shore of the Solway Firth at Bowness.
A significant portion of the wall still exists, particularly the mid-section, and
the wall can be followed for much of its length. As you leave Newcastle only small
parts of the wall still stand, then it becomes easier to find.
At Denton, there are two significant stretches of wall still standing. One to each
side of the main A1 (road from London to Edinburgh). The first includes the remains of
Denton Hall Turret and a 65m (213 feet) length of Wall. The second is a
longer stretch of wall just to the west of the road junction.
The next significant chunk of wall is at Heddon-on-the-Wall (well it would be,
wouldn't it?). There is another turret and a length of wall in a field at Bruton, just going
down the hill towards the river and the fort at Chesters.
