The Imperial Palace Grounds don't just house the Imperial family but also the Imperial Household offices and numerous guard posts, both old and new.
The Hyakunin is the biggest guard house and was built for the inspection of visitors entering through the Otemon Gate (main gate) to the inner citadel in the Edo period.

The whole 1,150,000 square meter site houses a total of 12,169 square meters of buildings. Most of the buildings were very badly damaged in 1945 and have been rebuilt since then.
