The Imperial Palace (Koukyo) is located in the centre of Tokyo on land that was once occupied by the Edo Castle in the 17th-19th century. Some of the original gates, moats and stone walls remain in the area.

The Imperial Palace is closed to the public, but the East Gardens are open to public as parks and it is possible to obtain a pass to visit the Imperial Palace Grounds and see some of the Imperial Buildings if you have plenty of time.
