Sint Maarten is part of the Netherlands Antilles and the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the capital is Philipsburg.
The main airport is at Simpsons Bay and it's possible to lie on the beautiful sand with the airplanes flying feet about your head as they come into land. This is also the area where the mega yachts and ocean cruisers dock in Simpson's Bay Lagoon protected from the wind.
Past the airport towards Maho are the casinos, big hotels and the remains of Mullet Bay resort on the golf course. The story is that unfortunately due to a corrupt insurance broker, the resort wasn’t insured against the damage caused by Hurricane Luis in 1995 and there was no money to fund the huge repair bills. Even now (2007) the villas remain derelict, an awesome reminder of the power of a hurricane.
