Turning the car at Hyde St Cable Winding Machinery The Central Powerhouse Cable Car

Cable cars were invented in 1873 in San Francisco as a means of carrying passingers over the steep hills more safely than with horse drawn carriages. They are powered from a central powerhouse by four underground cables which run the length of each route and can be gripped by each car.
