The Kinkakuji Temple (the temple of the Golden pavilion) was built by the Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu for his retirement in 1394. The Golden Pavilion appears to be floating above its reflection in the lake. Covered in thick gold leaf, the pavilion glows even under rainy skies. The path skirts around the lake, with the main temple buildings to the right, past the pavilion then winds up and around a beautiful garden and very popular with tourists.
There is a very old pine tree in the garden pruned in the shape of a boat.
