The Kyoto Imperial Palace was originally built in 794 but burnt down
numerous times. This current version was built in 1855. Enthronement of
a new Emperor and other state ceremonies are still held here. Foreigners
are given preferential access, but each tour is given an appointment and
must be on time or loose the opportunity.
The tour group was accompanied by an Imperial guard. We were not allowed
inside any of the buildings, but shown round the grounds and allowed to look
at the Visitors Galleries - where visiting dignitaries are entertained.
The main Imperial Palace buildings and the central courtyards are closed
and we were only allowed to look through the main gate.
