Paestum was abandoned in the 9th Century because of a combination of
Malaria and Saracen raids. it was only rediscovered in the 18th century when
a road was built cutting through the centre of the ancient town. The new road
cut straight across the Amphitheatre.
Compared with the other sites near Naples, not many of the walls of the
buildings in Paestum are still standing, but the paved roads, simple masaic
floors and the layout of the buildings indicated by the remaining walls give
a good indication of the living conditions in the town.
