Wall Paintings in the Calidarium

The main purpose of many of the wall paintings was to use illusion to expand the physical limits of the walls (early trompe l'oeil). As seen on the previous page, the walls of the indoor garden were painted with plants to make it seem more lush. The wall paintings are still in good condition and with the internal courtyards and cool shade, it would have been a superb summer villa by the sea.
