Mount Gambia is built on the slopes of an extinct volcano with three craters.
The main crater contains the Blue Lake - yes it is blue as you can see. We even went
to one of the other craters to check that all the lakes were not blue. Unfortunately
we arrived in the town about 6pm and so the Lady Nelson Discovery Centre and the Blue
Water papermill were closed.
Memo to other travellers - driving from Adelaide to Melbourne takes days if you want to
look at everything of interest on route. We spent four days and could have used at
least one more. When I did the trip for a second time (from Melbourne to Adelaide), there
still wasn't enough time to explore Port Fairy, Mount Gambia or the Grampians properly, although we
did get to the Museum in Millicent. Don't miss the Cape Jaffa Lighthouse at Kingston, the Cheese Factory
Museum in Meningie, Coonawarra vineyards, Tower Hill State Game Reserve, and Portland
Maritime Discovery Centre as well as all the sights included
in these photographs.
Do try to pick good weather - we had hailstones at the Apostles and low cloud in the
Grampians and it did spoil things a little.
