There are actually 10 bridges connecting Gateshead to Newcastle over the River Tyne. From the east these are the new Millennium footbridge (2000), the Tyne Bridge (1928), the Swing Bridge (1876), the High Level Bridge (1850), the Queen Elizabeth (Tyneside Metro) Bridge (1981), the King Edward Rail Bridge (1906), the Redheugh Bridge (1983), Scotswood Bridge (1967), the Blaydon Bridge (1990) and the Newburn Bridge (1893).
The oldest of the existing bridges, the High Level Bridge was designed by Robert Stephenson and opened in 1849. It has a double deck structure; the railway is carried on 6 ribbed arches supported by stone piers and the road below is suspended from the arches by wrought iron rods.
