Londoners have been demolishing and rebuilding London for about 2000 years. Some old buildings like Billingsgate Market and the Royal Exchange find new uses, other buildings continue to fulfil their original purpose, like the Guildhall and the Mansion House. Some commemorate past events like the Monument to the Great Fire of London in 1666.
