The City of London has existed since the Romans first built a wall around it
and stretches from the Inns of Court in the West, to the
Tower of London in the East and has formed the heart of the financial district
for many years. It has it's own Mayor and contains the Guildhall, the Mansion House,
the Royal Exchange, the Stock Exchange, the Lloyds Insurance market and the Bank of
England as well as the old markets of Smithfields (meat), Billingsgate (fish),
Spitalfields and Leadenhall (produce).
Now many of the major financial institutions are moving to new buildings in the
Docklands, leaving their history behind.
