Powder Tower

Much of Riga looks old, but for this page I have focused on what I think are some of the oldest pieces of the Old City. The Powder Tower is one of the oldest buildings in Riga and records of the tower can be traced back to 1330. It is the sole survivor of the 18 towers which used to be part of the fortifications. The city was protected by a wall from the early 13th century and some parts remain. The oldest domestic building in the City is 17 Liela pils iela and was built in the 15th century, its neighbours at 19 and 21 were built in the 17th and 18th centuries.
