Inside the Daibutsuden (the Great Hall), is the Buddha. This is one of the largest bronze images in the world. The Buddha (or Daibutsu) dates back to 746 although it was repaired in 1692 when both hands were replaced and the head restored. It is over 16m (48 feet) high and comprises 437 tonnes of bronze and 130kg of gold.
