The Kasuga Taisha Shrine is situated in the Nara Deer Park. It is
considered to be one of the three great shinto shrines of Japan. It was
founded in 768 and has two striking features:
- the vermilion colour, and
- the 3,000 stone and bronze lanterns which have been donated since the
11th century.
It has been rebuilt 57 times but always to the orginal plans.
