The Meiji-jingu Shinto Shrine is built as a series of courtyards, each separated by wooden walls and ornate gates.

Before entering the Shrine it is customary to wash at the wash house to the left of the inner Torii gate.

Then through the huge square wooden doorway into the Courtyard with the aged Cypress Tree. This courtyard leading to the inner sanctury (the sacred inner courtyard and the shrine). When reaching the edge of the inner sanctury one should clap and throw coins to the gods.
