The Agora in Athens was laid out in the 6th and 5th centuries BC. It has had a number
of additions since then and in the late 1940's about 400 modern buildings were cleared
to allow the ancient site to be understood. Excavations still continue but amongst other
remains, it contains the
Temple of Hephaestus (the best preserved ancient Greek temple in Athens), the Stoa
of Attalos (fully reconstructed in the 1950's and made into the Ancient Agora Museum),
and the Byzantine church of Agii Apostoli (built about AD 1000 and fully restored).
