The foundation stone was laid on September 29, 1907, and the completion of the west towers in September 1990 marked the end of eighty-three years of construction.
The official name of Washington National Cathedral is the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. The central tower is 676 feet above sea level, making its top the highest point in the District of Columbia.
