Battle Abbey Dormitories

The church itself was completed around 1094 and was probably the first Norman church to be built in England. In the late 13th century the Abbey was modernised and the east end was replaced with a new choir and 5 new chapels in the crypt below. The whole building was destroyed at the time of the Dissolution in 1538. The photograph above shows the remaining foundations of three of the five crypt chapels.
The ground floor of the Dormitory range or Dorter is at different heights to accomodate the sloping ground, and the vaulted ceilings in the Common Room and the Novices Chamber are in excellent condition.
