The Keep, Dover Castle
Kings Gate, Dover Castle

The massive square keep, was built by Henry II to replace the wooden one constructed on the spot by his great-grandfather William the Conqueror.
Keep yard, or the inner bailey with the walls and towers surrounding it, forms the inner ward of the Castle, approached by two gates - King's gate on the north-east, and Palace gate on the south.
Rochester Castle, Newcastle and Hedingham Castle are all built to similar designs.
