Holyrood Abbey was build by King David in 1128 and since the 15th
century, it has been the site of many royal coronations and marriage
ceremonies. It has been occasionally plundered and rebuilt over the years
until the roof collapsed in a hurricane in 1768 leaving it a ruin.
The only parts which now remain are the ruined nave of the 12th and 13th
century abbey church, built for Augustinian canons and a three-storey
building on Abbey Strand (at the east end of the Royal Mile) from the late 15th or early 16th century.
