St Cuthbert's from the Castle

The historic centre of Edinburgh is divided into two by the broad green swath of Princes Street Gardens where the Nor Loch used to be before it was drained in the 1820s. To the south the view is dominated by Edinburgh Castle, perched on the top of the extinct volcanic crag, and the long sweep of the Old Town trailing after it along the ridge and down the slopes to the south. To the north lies Princes Street and the straight Georgian avenues of the New Town.
