The East Midlands includes the counties of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland. It is the 4th largest region in England (slightly larger than Yorkshire) but only has the 8th largest population. The East Midlands Regional Assembly is based in Melton Mowbray.
It was the territory of the Corieltauvi tribe in the late Iron Age until the Romans took control of the region. They made Leicester the capital of an area called Ratae Corieltauvorum. The region also corresponds roughly to the the Anglo Saxon Kingdom of Mercia although this did include a further area to the west.
