St Peter's Basilica

Saint Peter's Basilica is the most prominent building inside the Vatican City and its dome is a dominant feature of the Roman skyline.
The obelisk dates back to Egypt and the 13th century BC. It was moved to Rome in AD37 to stand in the Circus of Nero and was moved to its present location in 1586. It is notable for being the second largest standing obelisk and is the only obelisk that has remained standing since it was erected during the Roman Empire.

St Peter's Square

St Peter's Square (Piazza di San Pietro) is surrounded by an elliptical colonnade which wraps around the square, embracing the faithful in "the motherly arms of the church".
