The Citadel

Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best preserved historical fortifications in the Caribbean. It was built over a period of 100 years from 1690.
Brimstone Hill is nearly 800 feet high with steep slopes and the Citadel is one of the earliest surviving examples of a style of fortification known as the 'polygonal system'. It is defended by seven-foot-thick walls of black volcanic stone--then better known as brimstone.
Brimstone Hill was abandoned in 1851, and the fort suffered neglect until 1965 when the site became a national park. Since then restoration has returned the imposing fortress on the hill to its original grandeur.
